Every May there is a group of folks at work who puts together this month long event called Ironman in May. It's intended to get people active and healthier. You have to complete an Ironman distance over the course of the entire month. You swim 2.4 miles, bike like 112 and run 26.2.
This will be the first year I'm going to try and complete all three. The first year I didn't sign up because I knew I would only do the running. Last year I realized they gave you prizes even if you didn't complete all three so I did the running and got a maverick gas card. This year I'm gonna go all the way. I started swimming last November so that shouldn't be a problem. The biking will be all on a stationary because I don't have a bike that works right now. And of course the running won't be a problem.
So far I have 9.5 miles run and 800 yards (.5 miles) swimming.

How do they work it? I mean, how do they know if you are doing the running, swimming, and biking?
Is it just an honor system or something? The reason I ask is this sounds like a pretty cool idea I could do at my own company.
Get me some details...
Tobe
Yeah, It's an honor system. Each building does their own thing a little different but in general the run can either be walking/hiking or running but you have to do at least 2 miles in a session for it to count (walking to the car after work doesn't count). The swimming is pretty much set at just swimming but you have to do 400 m(or yards) in a session for it to count. The biking can be outside or on a stationary but must be at least 3 miles in a session. We have a big charts in the lunchroom where you can sign up and check off your miles.
The people that run it do a really good job of going out and getting people to donate prizes. I haven't been able to attend the finish party yet, but they have pizza and then give out prizes. The people that finished get the first prizes, then the start going through all those that just participated. They even have these certificates for folks that finish.
All in all I think it's a good thing. At first I thought it was kind of cheesy but people get pretty excited about it. Some go crazy and "compete" to finish first. They usually finish in 3 or 4 days.
If you have any other questions let me know.
Perfect, thanks.
However, I do find it a little paradoxical that you are fed pizza at a party held solely to encourage physical fitness...
I know, the pizza is a bit weird but I think it's because somebody gives it to us free. Let me know if you start it up at your company. It would be interesting to see how it goes.
